Kevin Sonney - who, contrary to popular opinion was NOT raised by wolves - grew up in central North Carolina. He fell into the technology field by accident in 1991, when he gave up the wild and crazy lifestyle of an on-air AM radio DJ to become a mundane technical support monkey. The technology industry has never really recovered from this. Kevin has worked for such names as IBM, Red Hat, webslingerZ, and Lulu Technologies (we won't mention the ones that didn't survive the experience). He currently works as a Linux Administrator for Apptio. In his spare time he rescues stray animals and plays video games with his two sons. His wife, we're sad to say, helps him get past the really hard bits. Kevin is still not very mundane, he just got better at hiding it.

    I’ve always felt that I’ve been able to assess whether people “get it” or don’t pretty quickly – it’s made me by far Porivo’s best interviewer – if someone passes an interview with me, they’re solid :)

    I still get teased about this poor girl that came into an interview on a day where I wasn’t in the best of moods. I was apparently a bit over the top – there were at least 3 things on her resume about technologies she clearly didn’t understand in depth, just the buzzword level. I should have let up once it was obvious it wasn’t gonna happen I guess, but she ended up leaving bawling her eyes out.

    I have little tolerance for people that lie on their resumes, especially ones not even willing to learn what they’re lying about enough to cover during an interview :)

    I had division heads at Imonics borrow me for exactly that purpose. I never made anyone cry, though.

    actually, because i wanna finish fleshing out my oracle skillz, my ideal position now is as a senior member of a small-ish DBA team (java devel as they desire) at a biotech place. right now it’s just me and one other guy at porivo and while we’re both competent in too many cases it’s very much “blind leading the blind” like a failed 3-week effort on his part to get replication (not even multi-master) working.

    Second place would be to take one of the offers from those consulting companies where I’d work on those 5-member tiger teams that get massive training all the time but get shipped out to big companies for firefighting projects for 6 weeks at a time.

    I may just pick up the books, learn them, take the tests, get an OCP and just let it be at that and not worry about advanced stuff too much – picking the next job based on training does seem somehow wrong :)
